Tom Vogel
Tom is Sitrick And Company’s practice leader for capital markets and Latin America. On his second stint with Sitrick And Company, Tom covered the global bond markets, economics and Latin America for more than 15 years as an award-winning Wall Street Journal reporter and Caracas bureau chief, Bloomberg Latin America columnist and Dow Jones correspondent before moving into corporate, strategic and crisis communications. Tom has created and executed a wide range of highly-sensitive strategic communications campaigns for creditors in restructuring and bankruptcy situations, bond insurance companies, distressed debt investors, investment banks, international investors and hedge funds in addition to firms and high-profile individuals in the telecommunications, pharmaceutical, tourism, agriculture, publishing and luxury consumer goods across the U.S., Latin America and Europe. Most recently – and in close coordination with other Sitrick executives – Tom managed and executed a highly successful strategic communications campaign for individual GM investors during that firm’s restructuring by the U.S. auto task force. As a journalist, Tom covered everything from the Orange County default to a reclusive billionaire bond investor; from the growing influence of Berkeley’s economic faculty and Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez to guerrillas in Colombia; from a Peruvian hostage crisis to a Suriname pyramid scheme and the adoption of liberal economic policies across the Americas. Tom was a Pulitzer Prize finalist as a member of the Journal team covering the Mexican peso crisis. He won the Inter-American Press Association’s top award for Economics Reporting on Latin America, as a member of the same WSJ team. In between his two stints at Sitrick, Tom served director of communications for Barclays Capital in the Americas in charge of Latin America and the firm’s core U.S. business lines including a new leveraged-finance unit, investment-grade fixed income, prime brokerage, structured products and commercial real estate, among other businesses. He also worked closely with senior management on sensitive issues and oversaw internal communications. After Barclays, Tom was director of communications for Financial Security Assurance, a leading bond insurer. He formulated and successfully executed the firm’s first proactive media strategy as the industry weathered the most turbulent year in its history. In addition to capital markets and financial service-related clients, Tom manages the firm’s work in Latin America, where he lived for 12 years in Peru, Venezuela and Brazil while becoming fluent in Spanish and Portuguese. Tom holds a BA from the College of the Holy Cross and an MS from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.
