Mike Sitrick was never supposed to work in public relations. As a young man he wanted to be a journalist and worked briefly as a reporter when, in 1969, he found himself in talks with the Chicago Tribune about a job paying $125 a week.

He also received an offer worth $160 a week working in PR at the University of Maryland, where he had studied. “I said to my wife: ‘I love journalism but I’d rather eat,’ ” he recalls.

The companies, celebrities and other clients that have relied on Mr Sitrick’s skills since he founded his own firm in 1989 after working at various businesses in-house, will be glad he chose the career he did. From his headquarters in the heart of Los Angeles, Sitrick and Company has carved out a lucrative niche offering crisis advice for embattled companies and celebrities who have found themselves in the media’s cross-hairs.

On the high-profile personality front, he worked with billionaire Ron Burkle on his divorce, Paris Hilton on her jail scandal, Roy Disney on his ouster of Michael Eisner from the Walt Disney Co., and actress Halle Berry on her hit-and-run case. He helped Patricia Dunn, former chairwoman of Hewlett-Packard, clear her name after she was accused of illegal surveillance to plug media leaks.

Julie Roehm’s legal and public-relations strategy may seem hyperaggressive. Besides suing Wal-Mart for wrongful termination, the former marketing star has accused its top officers of violating the company’s conflict-of-interest rules. Now Roehm has hired Michael Sitrick, whose Los Angeles public-relations firm is known for going atomic on opponents, using “truth squads” (which dig up alleged inaccuracies in the media), “wheel of pain” tactics (negative publicity to quicken settlements), and high-profile journalists (who write profiles).

How did media depictions of ex-Los Alamos scientist Wen Ho Lee change so quickly from suspected Chinese spy to sympathetic victim of a bumbling government smear? Hardball Los Angeles flack Michael Sitrick takes some of the credit. Unbeknownst to the public, Sitrick, engaged since the summer by Lee’s lawyers, fanned the flames by challenging all of the government’s “continuing insinuations” and helpfully providing reporters with documents favorable to Lee. Knowing as much as anyone about the value of good publicity, Sitrick waived his normal fee.
